Have questions? We’re here to help you.

1. What is Jira Server?

Jira Server is the on-premise version of Atlassian’s project and issue-tracking software, designed to be hosted on a company’s internal servers or private infrastructure. It offers full control over data, security, and customizations, making it ideal for organizations with strict compliance requirements or those needing high configuration flexibility.

Key features include project management, issue tracking, reporting, and team collaboration. While Jira Server is being phased out in favor of Jira Cloud and Data Center, existing customers will receive support until February 2024.

2. What is the difference between Jira and Jira Server?

The primary difference lies in their hosting and management:

  • Jira Cloud: Hosted by Atlassian, it provides a subscription-based service with automatic updates, no infrastructure requirements, and out-of-the-box integrations. It’s ideal for teams seeking ease of use and scalability.
  • Jira Server: Hosted on your organization’s servers, it offers full control over data, security, and customizations. However, it requires internal resources for installation, maintenance, and updates.

Jira Server is no longer available for new purchases, with Atlassian recommending Cloud or Data Center as alternatives.

3. How to use Jira Server?

To use Jira Server, follow these steps:

  1. Installation: Download the Jira Server from the Atlassian website and install it on your organization’s servers, following the provided setup instructions.
  2. Configuration: Configure Jira Server by customizing workflows, permissions, and project settings according to your team’s needs.
  3. Create Projects: Set up projects and create issue types, such as tasks, bugs, and user stories, based on your team’s workflow.
  4. Add Users: Invite team members and assign roles, such as administrators, developers, or testers, based on the level of access required.
  5. Install Plugins: Install any necessary plugins, including test management integrations like QA Touch, to enhance functionality.
  6. Track Issues: Start managing projects and tracking issues using Jira’s dashboards, boards, and reports to monitor progress and performance.
  7. Maintenance: Regularly update and maintain the server, perform backups, and monitor performance to ensure optimal operation.
