Why Jira Alone Isn’t Enough for Test Management

Jira is great at tracking issues and managing agile workflows, since it was specifically designed for it. It was not designed to be a test case repository, and the team tried to force it into something that will have limitations.

Treating test cases as issues, breaks down fast. A test case has preconditions, steps, expected results, pass/fail/blocked outcome need to be tracked for the multiple executions over time. Jira issues are built in status transitions(To Do, In Progress, Done), and won’t have the test execution history. When the teams try to manage the test cases as native Jira tickets will have Verify – Login – Valid Credentials tickets which will make the sprint boards disorganized without any execution history.

There is no built in concept of a test run. Running the same 200 regression test cases in three different environments (staging, pre-prod, production) before a release is a regular QA task.  Jira does not have an option to show “there are 200 same test cases executed for the build 2.4.6, with the test results with the timestamp and done by this tester. When the team tries to create the workflow manually with labels, custom fields will face difficulties.
